Colleen Crosson's Music News

ColleenCrosson MusicNews - Nov/Dec

Happy Holidays everyone! It’s been an especially quiet November on the music front, but I’ve certainly been keeping busy – mostly still cleaning up from the snow and wind that “trimmed” our trees big time! Now I am looking forward to a different kind of tree trimming, enjoying holiday time with family and friends, and sharing some fun upcoming gigs with you. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving day with just our immediate family – very sweet indeed. I feel very blessed to live the life I do, and I thank all of you for being a part of it! Here’s what’s in store for the coming weeks:

This Saturday night, Nov. 26th, I’ll be singing at Jay’s Bistro, 135 W. Oak St., Fort Collins, CO, with Mark Sloniker on piano, and Myles Sloniker on bass. The band plays from 8:30-11:30 pm, with Mark doing a solo set from 6-8 pm. Treat your out of town visitors (or simply yourselves!) to a night of Jazz@Jays!

Friday, Dec. 2nd“Just Kidding!” (formerly Our Mothers’ Daughters) will perform at Dunn Elementary’s Sixth Annual Silent Auction at the “all new” Lincoln Center in Fort Collins. The event runs from 7-10 pm and includes complimentary appetizers and an amazing array of silent auction items to peruse. Tickets are $15 in advance (available at Dunn) and $20 at the door. Incidentally, it turns out we were ‘just kidding’ about our “new” name “Just Kidding!” !! We will be debuting our newest moniker (I swear this is gonna stick!), MARTINI ALICE, at this event! Cheers!

Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3rd and 4th - It’s that time of year again! Mark Sloniker and I will appear with Johnsmith for our annual 2 day extravaganza at Avo’s! I have been privileged to sing harmonies with John for many years now, each time he comes to Fort Collins to perform. We’re on our fifth year of 2 consecutive (SRO!) nights of singer/songwriter bliss at Avo’s. By popular demand, Mark will again be joining us on keyboard for BOTH nights, adding another layer to John’s fabulous songs. Saturday’s show starts at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday’s show a tad earlier at 7. Tickets are $17 general admission each night. Get your tix before these shows sell out, available at Avo’s (605 S. Mason St., Fort Collins, 970-493-5555), or at www.quantumarts.net

I’ll return to Jay’s Bistro for some festive holiday frivolity on Sat., Dec. 17th and again on New Year’s Eve. Make your reservations early!

Saturday night, December 24th, Christmas Eve, I will participate in 2 candlelight services at Unity of Fort Collins, 1401 W. Vine Dr. at 6 and 8 pm. Soul stirring music will be provided by Mark Sloniker (piano), and me (vocals/guitar), as well as other special guests to be announced. Lynn Kendall leads the services and always provides a thought provoking and fresh view of life and spirituality. Come celebrate the season with us! Childcare is provided at the 6 pm service.

And remember as you do your holiday shopping, about the gift of music – all my CDs are available on my website www.colleencrosson.com and also at CDBaby www.cdbaby.com . I am offering a buy 2, get one free sale for the holidays on my website only!! Just tell me which extra CD you want in the “instructions to merchant” section and I’ll send them out to you pronto!

Whatever you’re up to this holiday season, make it fun! Best wishes, Colleen

Colleen Crosson's Music News

ColleenCrosson MusicNews – September/October

My, oh, my, how the time does pass! Since last I wrote, the mornings and evenings have turned decidedly crisp and cool and we are on the verge of the Autumnal Equinox. I love this time of year – almost as much as my other favorite season, Spring, but in an altogether different way. I tend to get introspective as the days grow shorter, and “hunker down”, while Spring always has me bursting forth with energy. I suppose I’m just kind of emulating the seasons themselves……

I have had the last couple of weekends off from typical gigs, and have enjoyed relaxing and visiting with family, as well as treating myself to hearing others’ music. What a joy! Now I realize I’ve been consistently adding shows to my calendar without letting anyone know, so here’s what’s on the horizon:

This Saturday night, Sept. 24th, 8:30-11:30 pm, I’ll be singing at Jay’s Bistro, 135 W. Oak St., Fort Collins, with Mark Sloniker on piano and Gene Libbea on bass. I’m excited to have Gene with us – it’s been awhile, and he’s always very animated and fun. He even joins me singing on a tune or two. We’ll also be celebrating a special birthday with Cheri Nichols, who’ll be singing several tunes with us as well!

Next Saturday night, Oct. 1st, 7:30 pm - I’ve been invited to sit in with Kathryn Mostow and her band, as they celebrate the release of her third CD, “Rich Girl”, with a concert at Avo’s, 605 S. Mason St., Fort Collins. The stage will be oozing with talent, as Kathryn is joined by Bob Montgomery on piano and accordion, Christian Teele on drums, Chris Engleman on bass, and her producer, John McVey, on electric guitar and vocals. This will be loads of fun – hope you can come! $10 cover – a mere pittance for this line-up!

Sunday, Oct. 2nd, 9 and 10:30 A.M. – Mark Sloniker and I are almost always present on Sunday mornings to do the music at Unity of Fort Collins. What’s different about this morning is that Mark and I will be doing the message as well as the music! That message will be conveyed (mostly) through even more music and ecstatic poetry (Rumi and Hafiz are always favorites). Come be joyful with us! 1401 W. Vine Dr., Fort Collins

Sunday, Oct. 23rd, 6 pm – Bella Spark presents ONE Concert, celebrating Global Oneness Day, at the newly remodeled Fort Collins Lincoln Center. Bella Spark describes ONE as “a feel-good event of mega proportions - an inspiring, electrifying, celebration, power-packed into one evening of multiple live performances. ONE brings together world-class musicians and visionaries, along with renowned area performers to celebrate and promote the messages of peace, love and compassion. Jazz, fusion, rock, African drums, rhythm & blues, soul and inspiration, we are going to rock the house!” Featured artists include Tuatha, Kissidugu, Mark Sloniker, Colleen Crosson, Malcolm Watson (the barefoot violinist!) and more! For more information: www.BellaSpark.com Tickets are $20 adults, $10 children, and $16 students. www.lctix.com

Monday, Oct. 24th, 6-7 pm – “Just Kidding” will join Leslie Botha on KRFC Community Radio for her “Holy Hormones Honey!” show. We’ll be live in the studio, playing some tunes and chatting about women’s issues. Listen in on 88.9 FM in Northern CO or stream it live at www.krfcfm.org

Sat., Oct 29th, 10-11:30 A.M. – I’ll be playing kids’ songs with a Fall/Halloween theme for The Gardens on Spring Creek’s “Halloween Enchanted Garden” Festival. The event, which includes many different activities, runs from 10 am – 2 pm and is for kids 2-8 years old. The Gardens are located at 2145 Centre Avenue, Fort Collins, CO 970-416-2486 www.fcgov.com/gardens

Sat., Oct. 29th, 9-midnight – I switch gears from the kiddos and play the night away at Sonny Lubick’s Steakhouse, 115 S. College Ave. (downstairs, where the Catacombs used to be). Thanks to everyone who came out when I played in Aug., they have invited me back! Check out their website for happy hour food and drink specials: www.sonnylubicksteakhouse.com No cover!

I’ll keep you up to date on added shows, but that’s it for now. Happy Fall to All! Colleen

Colleen Crosson's Music News

ColleenCrosson MusicNews – August

Aaaahhhh….the sound of lovely rain is beating down on our roof as I write. After so much hot weather, it is a welcome change. We actually experienced much HOTTER and more humid weather the week before last on our family vacation to the Jersey shore. Record breaking heat, up to 110 degrees was the norm for most of our stay. Luckily, we had the sea breeze and the cool ocean water for relief! It was a fine respite before the “school year” kicks in, just a few short weeks away. I will never get used to how quickly the summer passes…..

Even though the kids will be back at school and my teaching schedule will ramp up, there is still plenty of outdoor summer fun to be had. Here are my remaining Streetmosphere dates, a special outdoor concert, and other upcoming gigs:

Streetmosphere – solo performance, Friday, Aug. 5th, 5:30-8:30 pm, College and LaPorte (Moe’s BBQ)

Streetmosphere – Sunday, Aug. 7th, 1:30-4:30 pm, Crosson-Sloniker Consort, Olive and College (Mugs)

Sonny Lubick Steakhouse – this is a new venue for me and I am excited to share it with you! I will play solo in the bar on Sat., Aug. 20th, from 9 pm – midnight. Sonny’s has an extensive bar menu and it’s happy hour the whole time I’m playing! Check out their website for specials: www.sonnylubicksteakhouse.com It’s always great to have an enthusiastic crowd show up for the “maiden voyage” so please come out if you can. I hear they like sing-a-longs there, so bring your favorite suggestions - a rousing version of “American Pie” perhaps? I’ll come prepared! No cover charge.

Avo’s Concert with “Just Kidding!” – Friday, Aug. 26th, 8 pm (605 S. Mason St.). Please join the former “Our Mothers’ Daughters” on the outdoor patio at Avogadro’s Number for some high energy, harmonious music and a big dose of frivolity. It’s not just a cappella anymore! Tickets are just $10 at the door. We only do a couple of concerts a year, so it’d be a bummer to miss this one!

Jay’s Bistro and Jazz Lounge – swingin’ it up on Sat. Aug. 27th, from 8:30-11:30 pm, with Mark Sloniker on piano and some fine bass player TBA. Jazz is always in style!

Streetmosphere – solo performance, Sunday, Aug. 28th, 1:30-4:30 pm, College and LaPorte (Moe’s BBQ)

Streetmosphere – Sunday, Sept. 4th, 1:30-4:30 pm, Crosson-Sloniker Consort (Old Town Square- south end)

Have a great week and beyond! Colleen

Colleen Crosson's Music News

ColleenCrosson MusicNews – July

Greetings e-pals! Hope everyone is having a sizzling summer, filled with footloose and fancy-free fun! I am enjoying lots of free time of late, to work in the gardens and get projects done. We have sure had our fill of crazy storms in these parts, which has created its own challenges for our homestead, but I AM enjoying the fact that I haven’t had to water anything for almost 2 weeks now – a rarity in CO! That, in itself, frees up a lot of my time during the summer…

It’s a big weekend for music in Fort Collins with the “Jazz Experience” happenings in downtown. I am not a part of this extravaganza per se (though Mark and Myles certainly are!); however, I have a really fun gig to remind you about. I will be doing a solo performance at the French Nest Open Air Market in Civic Center Park (corner of LaPorte and Howes) this Saturday. I’ll do 2 sets, at 11 am and 1 pm. If you’ve never been to this market, I highly recommend it for its abundance of unique and high quality arts, antiques, and collectables. You can visit http://thefrenchnestmarket.com/ for more details. If you’re going downtown for the Jazz Experience, please stop by for my early set first! I have also included an updated “rest-of-the-summer” schedule below – it’s really whizzing by, isn’t it?

Best,
Colleen

Hi all – I experienced a “be careful what you wish for” moment yesterday, when I commented on a facebook post about the lovely rain a friend was experiencing across town. I replied, “wish it was doing something here” and my wish was answered by the most torrential downpour and two long episodes of hail to boot! My gardens were pummeled and my basement also took on water. NOT what I was hoping for! The weather sure has been wacky lately – all over the country. I AM affirming that we will have delightful weather tomorrow, when “Just Kidding” takes the stage at Fort Collins Nursery. Please see details below. We PLAN on performing on the outside stage – sweet!
Hope to see you there. Colleen

Dear e-pals - Glorious rain here in Fort Collins, CO – I hope it continues throughout the night! We could use some greening up, and I just got my peas and some violas and primrose planted…..

On to my other passion besides gardening – here’s the music scene for the next couple of weeks:

Tomorrow night, Thursday, April 14th – I’ll join Mark Sloniker and several other musicians at the annual “Taste” event at the Hilton in Fort Collins, benefiting Neighbor to Neighbor and the Food Bank of Larimer County. More than 30 of the county's finest restaurants and nearly 20 of the its finest wineries and breweries participate in THE TASTE, providing a uniquely memorable evening that highlights the best Larimer County has to offer in local food, wine, and beer. In addition to fabulous food and drink, the event features an exciting silent auction featuring local products, services, and artwork as well as live jazz entertainment from "The Nu Classics featuring James Scott", and Mark Sloniker and friends. The silent auction also features the popular Palette of Plates - an auction of special plates designed by local artists and - new this year - Nests for Neighbors, with specially designed bird houses. Love that!

General Admission Tickets for the event are $65.00 per person. Entry 6:00 pm

VIP Admission Tickets $95.00 per person. Entry 5:00 pm

Come and enjoy an evening of exceptional food, beverages and music! Your participation will help to provide housing stability and reduce hunger in Larimer County.

More information: http://www.tastebenefit.org/

Saturday, April 23rd, 8:30-11:30 pm – I’ll again join Mark Sloniker at Jay’s Bistro, 135 W. Oak St., Fort Collins for an evening of fine jazz. My “favorite” (can’t help it, I’m his Mom…) bass player, Myles, will not be with us this time around, as he is on a month long southwest and west coast tour with The Muse’s Market and the Gabrielle Loiuse Show. Check out these sites to learn more about these impressive groups and spread the word if you know folks in the cities they’ll be visiting. Thanks!

Of course, I’m sure we will have a very fine bass player joining us in Myles’ stead on Saturday night – no worries there! Thanks for your support of live music and the Fort Collins community, Colleen

Hi all - I’ve added one more thing to this weekend’s schedule and wanted to share it with you. Mark Sloniker and I will join a host of others in celebrating Cancer Survivor’s Day. This free day-long event of friendship, survivorship, and celebration is full of talented local artists and is happening this Saturday, April 2nd, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Griffin Concert Hall – formerly the old Fort Collins High School. I have attached a schedule of events for your convenience. Mark and I will play from 3-3:30 pm in the Griffin Concert Hall.

While I’m here, I’ll shout out a quick reminder of my solo gig at C.B. & Potts @ Collindale (Horsetooth and Lemay, Fort Collins) this Friday evening, April 1st, from 6-8 pm!

Enjoy the weekend – I hear it’s supposed to be gorgeous in these parts! Best, Colleen

Happy Spring! As I waded through the debris left on my lawn and gardens by our most recent windstorm, I spied LOTS of green peeking through the detritus . I am very excited about this, my favorite time of year! Daffodils are already blooming in the south gardens, crocuses are everywhere, and the other bulbs are not far behind. Spring speaks of hope, renewal, and growth, and I am wide open for it all!

We have just returned from a wonderful week of spring break vacation in San Francisco. So great to be back in that city again with its diversity and culture! The weather was very rainy, but didn’t get in our way much as we trekked through some of our favorite spots - Chinatown, North Beach, Muir Woods, and Golden Gate Park. The food was fabulous and the scenery breathtaking. We also played a Sunday service at a Unity Spiritual Center while there. Now that we’re back in town, here’s what’s happening on the Fort Collins musical front for me:

This Saturday night, 3/26, 8:30-11:30 pm – I’ll be singing at Jay’s Bistro, 135 W. Oak St., Fort Collins, with my favorite musical duo – pianist Mark Sloniker and bassist Myles Sloniker. Join us for some jonquil-celebrating jazz!

Next Friday night, 4/1, 6-8 pm – I have a new venue to play and share with you - no foolin’! - I am thrilled to be doing a solo gig at C.B. & Potts Restaurant and Brewery at the Collindale Golf Course, 1441 E. Hhhmmm…feels like I just wrote one of these, but I’m realizing that was 2 weeks ago for my LAST gig at Jay’s! Time continues to fly by…

I have 2 events this weekend to tell you about:

Saturday night, Feb. 12th, I’ll sing at Jay’s Bistro with Mark Sloniker on piano and Gene Libbea on bass. It’s been awhile since Gene was “on the scene” with me, so I’m looking forward to it, especially since he will sometimes throw in some harmonies with me (Gene used to be in the Grammy winning Nashville Bluegrass Band, so I trust him with that!). Since it is Valentine’s Day weekend, I’m sure we’ll throw in some favorite love songs, but don’t worry – we’ll try to stay somewhere in the middle of the spectrum between “totally over the top mushy” and “love stinks”….We aim to please! Jay’s is serving up a very sensual food experience for the occasion, too. Check out the menu at www.jaysbistro.net . The band plays from 8:30-11:30 pm, with Sloniker doing a solo set from 6-8.

Sunday, Feb. 13th, Mark Sloniker and I will be hosting our annual JOY concert at Unity of Fort Collins www.unityfc.org . Every year we celebrate the anonymous donation of our grand (and I do mean grand in both senses of the word!) piano that came to live with us at Unity, bringing the music to a whole new, joyful level! Joining us in the frivolity will be Cory Carroll on bass and Rob Wojtowick (aka Oscar deZoto!) on drums. We will share potluck desserts/finger foods (chocolate is popular…) after the concert. Love offerings will go to our joyful Unity community.

I hope you can “joyn” us for one or both of these events! Have a great weekend, whatever it holds for you. The weather is supposed to gorgeous in Fort Collins, CO! A welcome respite from recent double digit negative temps…..

Best, Colleen

Happy New Year! Or, Happy New You, as we say at Unity. The start of each year is traditionally a time where we take stock of the past and look toward the future – recognizing the things/attitudes we might want to let go of, and affirming new approaches/directions for our life. I am affirming a full student schedule and new, exciting places to play music this year. I am pleased to say I’m off to a good start, with several new students lined up and a new venue for music this weekend. If any of you have venue suggestions for me, or know of folks who might want to explore guitar or voice lessons, please let me know, or send them my way. Thanks in advance!

This Saturday, Jan. 15th, 5:30-8:30 pm, I’ll be performing solo (vocals/guitar) at The Rustic Oven SOUTH, 2350 E. Harmony Rd., Fort Collins. A great crowd will help me get invited back, and I hope my “southside” and Loveland fans will find it easy to drop by!

Sat., Jan. 29th, 8:30-11:30 pm, I’ll sing jazz at Jay’s Bistro, 135 W. Oak St., Fort Collins, with Mark Sloniker on piano and Myles Sloniker on bass.

I hope you are all having a great start to the new year and affirming endless possibilities! Best wishes, Colleen
